Clinical opportunities:

Jos University Teaching Hospital, Plateau State is in the north central part of Nigeria in West Africa. It is a 600 bedded tertiary health facility. The department of Psychiatry was established in 1980 and it currently has several psychiatry subspecialties such as General Adult, Child and Adolescent, Forensic, Drugs and Substance Disorders, Psychogeriatrics, Community Psychiatry, and Consultation Liaison units.

Overview of services provided:

The Department of Psychiatry, Jos University Teaching Hospital offers clinical services to children and adults from at least five states in the northern part of Nigeria. The clinical arm of the department holds at least one specialized clinic except on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when two to three specialized clinics run concomitantly in different parts of the hospital and communities. In addition to the clinical services, the department has daily academic activities which hold in person and remotely. Some at the departmental levels and others at unit levels. The department has a rich complement of staff and engages multidisciplinary teams to institute forms of biopsychosocial treatment strategies geared at patient centred care. The department also provides community mental health services in different parts of Plateau State ranging from general psychiatric services to rehabilitation care.

Aside clinical services, units in the department engage in collaborative intra and inter departmental research activities as well as trainings of psychiatric trainees, medical students, community health workers, and other allied professionals. Daily academic activities are carried out at specific times such as morning reviews, afternoon seminars, journal reviews and online teachings amongst others.
